About EnvelopeBooks

A book is a letter from a writer to a reader.

We provide the envelope and the delivery service.

EnvelopeBooks is a founder-led, design-led micro-publishing house. We publish fiction and non-fiction — any subject, any period — chosen for quality, not category. Our catalogue is generalist. Our standards are not.

We exist because articulate writers with worthwhile stories deserve a serious reception. Too many manuscripts vanish into closed submission systems. Too many authors are taken advantage of by charlatan firms that accept everything and care about nothing. Not at EnvelopeBooks. We read properly. We edit rigorously. We design meaningfully. And we say no when the work isn’t right.

Every book passes through an intensive process: author liaison, copy-editing, fact-checking, professional typesetting. Every stage is met with detailed scrutiny. The result is a book that feels like a book — not a document, not a dissertation, but an object made by people who understand what books are for.

A message from the publisher

Stephen Games, Founder of EnvelopeBooks

I started Booklaunch as a magazine that publishes extracts from new books rather than reviews of them because I wanted readers to meet writers directly. Authors then began asking me whether I could help them publish properly — not through a service that took their money and handed back a document but through a process that treated their work the way a book deserves to be treated.

EnvelopeBooks is the answer. I publish what interests me, across subjects and genres, because I trust editorial judgment more than market formulas. I am an interventionist editor. I will tell you honestly whether your book is likely to work, and I will say no when it isn’t — because saying yes to everything is its own kind of disrespect.

A book should look and feel as though someone cared about it. And we do. That is the whole idea.
