There are over 6,000 zoos in the world. Not enough of them treat their animals well. And then there are private owners.

We tend to think of animals as cute, and the media often use stories about them as clickbait to make us go ooh and aah. But behind the scenes, animals can be kept in terrible conditions by zoos and owners, and deprived of even the most basic rights. 

This book documents twenty global rescue missions that should open our eyes to everyday abuses and the urgent need for intervention.

Background

Award-winning news photographer Roger Allen had often taken animal photos, but never grasped how badly humans can mistreat other sentient beings.

Everything changed for him when he met Mely, an orang-utan that had been shackled all its adult life to the wooden verandah of a riverside house in remote Borneo. 

Mely was drained of life but instinctively reached out one hand to him. Roger reached back, they touched, and in an instant he was converted into an impassioned animal-rights campaigner.

In this stunning book of colour photographs, Roger documents the dramatic rescues he has brought to the world’s attention — of tigers, lions, rhinos, dogs and bears — as well as, in many cases, their happy outcomes.
